What is Nifty 50 index?

 

The NIFTY 50 index is a well-diversified 50 companies index reflecting overall market conditions. NIFTY 50 Index is computed using free float market capitalization method. The Nifty 50 Companies index consists of 50 Indian stocks Companies list of 14 (Previously 13) important sectors of the economy.

These 50 Stock Companies have different weightage in Nifty 50 Index.

The basis of Nifty 50 is closing prices on 3rd November 1995 with a base value of 1000 and with a base capital of Rs. 2.06 trillion.

Computation & Trading in Nifty 50 Index

Nifty 50 is computed by free-float capitalization method.

It is traded frequently in both options and future market. For trading purpose, the current lot size of Nifty is 50 units.

Reliance Industries Ltd. (Reliance Weight in Nifty 50) has the highest weightage having 9.63% weightage in Nifty 50 Companies list 2021, whereas  HDFC Bank is on second place having 9.11% weightage & Infosys is on third spot having 8.74% in Nifty 50 Companies list 2021 based on closing prices of July 2021. These stocks are called Nifty heavy weights stocks.

Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (IOC) has the least weightage of 0.38% in Nifty 50.

Tata Consumer products Ltd. (TATACONSUM) is the new entrant in the Nifty 50 List; whereas Gail (India) Ltd. exited the index w.e.f. 1st March 2021.

Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd. & Bharti Infratel Ltd. has been replaced by SBI Life Insurance Co. & Divi’s Laboratories Ltd. with effect from September 25, 2020.

There was exclusion of Vedanta Ltd. in the Nifty 50 Index from July 31, 2020. HDFC Life (HDFCLife) has been included as a replacement of Vedanta in Nifty50 Index.

There was exclusion of  YES BANK  in the Nifty 50 Index on March 19, 2020. Shree Cement Ltd has been lately included in Nifty 50 Companies List 2020.
